Upcoming Changes to CHIP & Medicaid Could Affect Coverage for Millions

On April 1, 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will reinstate the requirements and conditions for CHIP & Medicaid coverage that they waived during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you or a family member have health insurance through Medicaid or CHIP, you may soon need to take steps to find out if you can keep that coverage.

What you can do now

If you haven’t already received a renewal letter from your state’s Medicaid agency, here are some things you can do now:

  • Make sure your contact information is up-to-date, so you will get important information about your Medicaid or CHIP coverage. If you get benefits from the Ohio Department of Medicaid, call the Ohio Medicaid Consumer Hotline at (800) 324-8680 to check or update your contact information. The hotline is available Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 8 PM and Saturday from 8 AM to 5 PM.
  • Pay close attention to your mail. After your state Medicaid agency reviews your Medicaid or CHIP eligibility, they will send you one of the following in the mail:
    1. A letter telling you that your state Medicaid agency is renewing your Medicaid or CHIP coverage, or
    2. A letter telling you that your State Medicaid agency is ending your Medicaid or CHIP coverage, or
    3. A Medicaid or CHIP renewal form asking you for more information to see if you or your family member can still get Medicaid or CHIP. If you get a renewal form, fill it out and return it as soon as possible to help avoid coverage gaps.
