Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV) on March 31 celebrates trans people by honoring the progress and resilience of the community.
Trans hate is an epidemic. We see it in the discriminatory laws that American politicians push and the executive orders that deny the existence of trans and intersex people. We see it in the stories that are told in the news, and the misinformation they spread. We see it in the removal of the “T” from the Stonewall National Monument website. We see it in the violent and dismissive comments that trolls spew, and the social media policies that give them the microphone.
No matter how much bigotry tries, transgender people cannot – and will not – be erased. Trans love, joy, and rage is more powerful than the hate that tries to stomp it down.
To the transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming community: Be you, however you can or need to be right now. Surround yourself with community, in-person or online. Make art – lots of it. Rest. Protest. Protect yourself. However you want – or don’t want – to be visible, we support you. We see you. And we stand with you.
To allies: You must be loud. Show up. Be angry. Donate to trans-led organizations like Trans Ohio, Black Trans Men of Ohio, and Trans Joy Akron. Call and email your representatives. Defend our trans siblings from erasure and violence.
Together, let’s celebrate the power of trans visibility. Find a celebration, resource fair, or group in Ohio honoring this day:
