Equitas Health mourns the recent passing of Graig Allen Cote. Graig was a beloved educator, speaker, author, and tireless advocate whose impact on the HIV/AIDS community will resonate for generations.
Graig lived openly, courageously, and with radical compassion. Diagnosed with HIV in 1986, he embarked on a lifelong mission of advocacy and education. He was a survivor in every sense of the word and built community along the way – serving as Board President of the Ohio AIDS Coalition, chairing the Community Advisory Board for the AIDS Clinical Trial Group at OSU, and co-chairing the Equitas Health Pharmacy Advisory Committee. Through his work, Graig helped shape policy, support research, and uplift others.
He was a gifted educator, teaching at The Ohio State University, lecturing across schools and universities, and, most recently, serving as a substitute teacher for adoring elementary schoolers. His voice – honest, unflinching, bitingly humorous, and always full of heart – was a beacon for those living with HIV and all those fighting to end the epidemic. In his own words:
“We are vocal in our pursuit, fueled by commitment and passion, covered with the memories, blood, and sadness of those that came before us. We are the voice of those who died. … We are a new community standing at the front of the parade of life as we laugh, care, and share.” (From POZ Magazine)
Graig’s life was a testament to resilience and love. A frequent presence at Equitas Health healing retreats, he never knew a stranger. His warmth and generosity touched everyone he met. He leaves behind a legacy of advocacy, education, and community – reminding us to speak truth, fight stigma, and care deeply.
May we carry forward Graig’s spirit, and may his memory be a blessing.
