House GOP Leadership Deny LGBTQ+ Members and Employees Protections

We are grateful that in the face of continued discrimination against LGBTQ+ people by Republicans in the Ohio House, we have advocates and supporters like House Minority Leader Emilia Strong Sykes in our corner. We thank Leader Sykes for her effort to call attention to the obvious lack of protections against discrimination for LGBTQ+ House members and staff by calling for revisions to the House Administrative Reference Guide.

It is short sighted and inexcusable for House GOP leadership to deny LGBTQ+ members and employees the same protections as their peers in the Ohio Senate and in state agencies by way of Gov. DeWine’s executive order earlier this year. While this latest move by the House Speaker isn’t surprising, it remains inexcusable. Earlier this year Speaker Householder invoked fear-based, divisive tactics to intimidate public libraries that had organized drag events for their communities.. We stand by our response to offer cultural competence training for Speaker Householder and other House leaders because LGBTQ+ Ohioans deserve equitable treatment, protection, and representation whether they be in a library or the legislature.

Additionally, the General Assembly can act now to extend protections against discrimination to more people by moving forward the Ohio Fairness Act (SB11) to ensure these protections for all LGBTQ+ employees in Ohio – public or private.
