Hearing for Pastor Protection Act Thursday, November 29: Call your state Senator today!

The Ohio Senate is moving quickly on the Pastor Protection Act and we need your help to stop it.

Can you call your Ohio Senators TODAY to tell them to vote AGAINST the Pastor Protection Act (HB 36)?

As a reminder, HB 36 would allow ministers to refuse to preside over marriages that are contrary to their religious beliefs and would allow “religious societies” to refuse to host such marriages on their property. The bill would codify discrimination in Ohio law by allowing undefined “religious societies” to deny public accommodations to people, like LGBTQ Ohioans, under the guise of religious freedom.

Call your Senators TODAY to urge them to vote AGAINST this discriminatory bill.

This week the Senate Judiciary committee is holding three different hearings on the bills—one for the sponsor, one for supporters, and one for opponents—and is likely to vote on the bill late this week. Like we did in the House, Equitas Health will be testifying AGAINST this bill on Thursday at the opponents’ hearing.

Will you join us on Thursday at the Statehouse?

We’d love to pack the hearing room on Thursday morning to show the Ohio Senate that there is strong opposition to HB 36. Join us, along with Equality Ohio, on November 29 at 9:30 AM in the North Hearing Room at the Ohio Statehouse! The North Hearing Room is on the 2nd floor of the Senate Office Building.

Can’t join or want to double your impact? Call your Senators today to urge them to vote NO on HB 36.

The Pastor Protection Act isn’t problematic because it affords pastors the right to refuse to preside over ceremonies that conflict with their religious beliefs—that right is already duly enshrined in both the US and Ohio Constitutions.

The Act is problematic because it would allow undefined “religious societies” to discriminate against LGBTQ Ohioans and keep them from accessing public accommodations. Let’s make it clear to our Senators that Ohio won’t accept this kind of discrimination.

Join us by finding and calling your Senators TODAY or by attending the opponent hearing THURSDAY.

Yours in the fight,
